EVER!<p></p><p>Shane and I went to the store last week to update our wardrobe, which was in desperate need of updating. I found lots of great clothes to purchase and during checkout, the cashier convinced me to apply for the store credit card to get a huge discount on my total. I figured what the heck… I got 35% off my stuff and on the contract, the store manager authorized I would get 35% my purchases on my next visit. Despite a 30% interest rate on the card (Are they insane?), I still got the card. I don’t ever carry a balance on such cards anyway. </p><p>I went back to the store yesterday all ready to use my additional 35% discount. I shopped and shopped, but settled on a couple pairs of slacks that fit me like a glove. I go up to the cashier and show her my contract with the authorization for my discount. Her response was this… “Oh, we can’t give discounts on Lee-brand products.” </p><p>What? I just said, in that case I don’t want the pants and left. Thanks for wasting my time. I could have argued… the handwritten statement on my contract said “35% off my next purchase.” There was no exclusions listed. I just decided then and there no more jumping through the ridiculous hoops Kohl’s makes you jump through to get their discounts… no Kohl’s kash… no buy one get one half off. Just price your damn crap at a fair price and sell it. </p><p>I did find on their website this page about exclusions —(<a href="https://cs.kohls.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1086/~/exclusions">https://cs.kohls.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1086/~/exclusions</a>) </p><p>I was shocked how many products they sell are exempt from any discounts. There are a buttload—not just Lee-brand items. It would be hard to find things not excluded. Their whole discount model is such a scam. I’m cancelling my credit card with them and will never buy from them again. I’m turning into a grumpy old man who does shit like this.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd8ufnS5uliSoUZuHtzHB4l6khtiW6lb-MD4nRVuXgs1k3SWllqDb7DE8-Sj5y0zcXMEkRZ_LOKKKg4JXQKvGIzYuGFetXKML4AaKHVeGlO2AibmN0yPhmDSqrhlJa6PEAwdI3V9LyuIoxLZe2-RbWiNjax9yci5vMIktz5zzp3wWZXm_LG3giuN1P/s3899/44C875A3-B350-4673-8F12-18FD5920FCB0.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2924" data-original-width="3899" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd8ufnS5uliSoUZuHtzHB4l6khtiW6lb-MD4nRVuXgs1k3SWllqDb7DE8-Sj5y0zcXMEkRZ_LOKKKg4JXQKvGIzYuGFetXKML4AaKHVeGlO2AibmN0yPhmDSqrhlJa6PEAwdI3V9LyuIoxLZe2-RbWiNjax9yci5vMIktz5zzp3wWZXm_LG3giuN1P/w400-h300/44C875A3-B350-4673-8F12-18FD5920FCB0.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-2201569134261044312023-05-08T16:26:00.001-07:002023-05-08T16:26:46.735-07:00Yeah… I Know… It’s Been A While<p style="text-align: left;"><br /></p><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWikS1tYnkwjhKk4VU832TtVXgVGNnXLOa6emdOn-IisXH9S0KgDJuO0zFlYJzcnr4uu1cfHIT6n4T7w1T5HHtbM0YgLha7unROxAZnodqUwcXXTe_IPfGD_ROJx6K6zlWAHLdWOKD_zCiBwKZ8x0rfgF30-8ATdbZAHM9JWUPBlsA1VM7iBMC_mNT/w640-h480/IMG_4082.jpeg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="640" /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><b>This is Dinah relaxing on the hassock. Since last time I posted, we spent the summer and fall in Maine last year. Over the winter we decided that, even though our house in Maine was beautiful, it just wasn’t right for us. We called our realtor in Maine and listed it as a “pocket listing.” We closed the house down for the winter, so it was hardly in shape for putting on the market. Just a few days later, we had a buyer… all cash, no contingencies. We were shocked. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Anyway… the house in Maine is sold. We are currently a one-house family again. That house is in Rising Sun, Maryland, which is a rural town where I grew up and most of my family still lives. The new plan is to move back to a city. We’ve lived in New York City and Washington DC in the past, but as retirees, those cities have high costs of living. We are actively looking at another city that is much more affordable. We’ve been exploring this city and think we’ll love living there… but everyone thinks we are crazy when they find out which city we are looking to live in. It does have a bit of a high-crime reputation. We got tickets to see the revival of 'Funny Girl' with Beanie Feldstein and Jane Lynch. We had a pretty good time. The first act is definitely much better than the second. From the time we bought our tickets to the time we actually saw the show, the show officially opened and the reviews came out. They were mostly not great. I agreed pretty much with the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/24/theater/funny-girl-review.html" target="_blank">Times review</a>. The problem with the show isn't that it doesn't star the original Funny Girl (Barbra), but that the plot of the show is VERY dated. Anyway... it was fun and it has been a long time since there was anything on Broadway I wanted to see. </p><p>Yesterday we walked around Greenwich Village and had a late breakfast at a diner there. I gorged myself on pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage. It was so good. Later last night we celebrated our 24th anniversary a bit early by having dinner at Chez Josephines in Mid-Town. It's a great restaurant with naked pics of Josephine Baker all over the place. They have a pianist playing dinner music and delicious food. We shared a bottle of wine. Shane had a steak and I had the grilled salmon. For dessert we split the chocolate mousse cake. It came out with "Happy Anniversary" written on the plate along with a lit candle. </p><p>After dinner, we met up with one of my nieces who lives in NYC, and sang the night away at a piano bar in the Village... Marie's Crisis is the name of the club and it is a lot of fun if you like show tunes... which I do. It was a fun (but oh so pricey) short trip. </p>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-9448140072373556852022-04-25T14:46:00.001-07:002022-04-25T14:46:54.464-07:00Pretending Like This Blog Never Had a Break<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlP-ykc3PmOOuPmnnYVNmGP0_Q8F-FO4ICgmQOzXxpYNLyH4NA8Z4Eb1x6vBnRDBiQ_ICsYQnp1Z1hz7QE1jbODCrSJtrpuaQBdjmMPzreBdZuTm9esr5NZy-_TpHywIy0_OwyDYn46OdUbkKHY6E995_14dF-9eEHt94JJ5tuAyGqgNkhJNvwQ8Cu/s4032/IMG_3496.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="537" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlP-ykc3PmOOuPmnnYVNmGP0_Q8F-FO4ICgmQOzXxpYNLyH4NA8Z4Eb1x6vBnRDBiQ_ICsYQnp1Z1hz7QE1jbODCrSJtrpuaQBdjmMPzreBdZuTm9esr5NZy-_TpHywIy0_OwyDYn46OdUbkKHY6E995_14dF-9eEHt94JJ5tuAyGqgNkhJNvwQ8Cu/w726-h537/IMG_3496.JPG" width="726" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>It isn't even May yet and yesterday I mowed our lawn for the third time this year. Last year, we sold our house in Stonington and bought a new place in Deer Isle, which is very near the old place. Tomorrow, we're doing a short trip to NYC to see a show (Funny Girl) and celebrate our anniversary a bit early. This weekend, we'll be going to see a local production of the Tony-winning musical, Fun Home, and to see the Orioles play the Red Sox. <p></p>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-17035810797502213712021-01-01T19:02:00.001-08:002021-01-01T19:03:49.549-08:00Happy New Year!<p> </p><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DcAfisLMMX8" width="560"></iframe><div><br /></div><div>Hopefully, 2021 is better than 2020. We've been in Maryland for 2 and a half weeks now. I still plan on posting some pictures of the improvements we made to the house. First, I thought I'd post some pics of our holiday celebration with family. Shane and I hosted Christmas dinner at our house with my mom, sister, two of my nieces and one of their husbands. Usually, there are many more, but our house struggled to hold seven. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6jBIE7dYDc_1dDyeIdAPgCPlOfXDgqoWC0yVeh5nhU-hIEC-cojvkKIPTll-0wqdWGmtGvlxA99lRBo3j8sHbidIL7DmCdcXxMCD4DOeTzWKb5bFaTLZHuSTyQYPUsJE7hjUlNwpbyMM/s2048/IMG_5613.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6jBIE7dYDc_1dDyeIdAPgCPlOfXDgqoWC0yVeh5nhU-hIEC-cojvkKIPTll-0wqdWGmtGvlxA99lRBo3j8sHbidIL7DmCdcXxMCD4DOeTzWKb5bFaTLZHuSTyQYPUsJE7hjUlNwpbyMM/w608-h456/IMG_5613.jpeg" width="608" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In our living room opening presents. It turned out great and I'll show more pictures later of the final product. In the photo above, Dinah awaits at the back door for my return after I take the trash out. We have been busy decorating for Christmas. Tonight, my sister and one of my nieces came over and treated us to Mexican takeout. It was delicious! <p></p>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-30846999890605153382020-12-08T14:54:00.000-08:002020-12-08T14:54:20.468-08:00So Much for Dinah's Modeling Career<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgo84CCJo36q3o9XhBQ0WsyviyIRqqEbdF0yIJ8DmA1N7SxgU5XdZdekziqrWIzYsaLfqb2etqWgG9E1inGGQu-UpKqH6yP6jXw-GxBQHJmtWB1KrhzHvw6oPeo3mGJNXOIWP3Dl1QSZI/s2048/IMG_2336.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="563" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgo84CCJo36q3o9XhBQ0WsyviyIRqqEbdF0yIJ8DmA1N7SxgU5XdZdekziqrWIzYsaLfqb2etqWgG9E1inGGQu-UpKqH6yP6jXw-GxBQHJmtWB1KrhzHvw6oPeo3mGJNXOIWP3Dl1QSZI/w422-h563/IMG_2336.JPG" width="422" /></a></div>I stupidly let Dinah out in the front yard last night for a quick pee off the leash. We've done it dozens of times with no bad outcome, but last night was different. There was something in the yard... a deer I assume. And Dinah took off after it. <div><br /></div><div>She went off like a streak in the dark and disappeared. It was only for 2 minutes with me calling her to come back (screaming like a crazy man), which she did eventually, but it was a very long 2 minutes. </div><div><br /></div><div>This is what she looked like when she got back. I assume she got scratched by a branch under a pine tree. She was lucky it did not go into her eye. It seems to be healing nicely, but lessoned learned about letting a certain puppy out off the leash. </div>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-26737278331158192792020-12-06T19:31:00.001-08:002020-12-06T19:33:50.042-08:00Dinah's Evening Walk Down the Road<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO1flj6TZWFcAG00P_6zufSTHgHSx0losb5YEIxR54otPFccpK-eGxt6858xf6HikueyFF_5Mk-JDZb3ReyKB4tUApuLP7dYIBxExcO7vVobT_kPpE3OT0ZL3H4g2zWNT7O_0d92Nhd_w/s2048/IMG_2325.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="502" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO1flj6TZWFcAG00P_6zufSTHgHSx0losb5YEIxR54otPFccpK-eGxt6858xf6HikueyFF_5Mk-JDZb3ReyKB4tUApuLP7dYIBxExcO7vVobT_kPpE3OT0ZL3H4g2zWNT7O_0d92Nhd_w/w668-h502/IMG_2325.JPG" width="668" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I took these photos on an evening walk today. The pictures were taken at a neighbor's property where I often take Dinah, our dog, to walk near our home in Maine. It is away from the road, so I can take her off leash. You can easily sense Dinah's joy as she runs free around the field and woods. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Tonight there was a beautiful post-sunset sky. Mind you, that this was taken just after sunset, which was about 3:56 p.m. today. And the days are still getting shorter. Today was mostly cloudy, but a huge improvement from yesterday when it rained all day. We woke up this morning to a dusting of snow that quickly melted away. </div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_00YpQNUBpvnUjUdFyVI-xf4BuJZzWiMR6znFHxNUVJGsj-wHEYNXxlBo053ShVhOLFmnaJ7Y1RJzNzscZ2Fh9YsweMQFXAA7qRyEc-RBSlBohyBGssgZmdSo5OLsoxEqU_WSGweGg2E/s2048/IMG_2326.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="501" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_00YpQNUBpvnUjUdFyVI-xf4BuJZzWiMR6znFHxNUVJGsj-wHEYNXxlBo053ShVhOLFmnaJ7Y1RJzNzscZ2Fh9YsweMQFXAA7qRyEc-RBSlBohyBGssgZmdSo5OLsoxEqU_WSGweGg2E/w668-h501/IMG_2326.JPG" width="668" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS2940maDsH4jS09zJMeLKZEKhr_cWVN8ToTtG7PBn42lv6wk4K03z4ZWlR_pP5rqdyXEfrGWbg62vLSZ6u43PDWSZ2pOCNlS8kFIfsn9whYWY4F5QW2EaElJp4nAvWoTfhAGvELwdipU/s2048/IMG_2329.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="489" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS2940maDsH4jS09zJMeLKZEKhr_cWVN8ToTtG7PBn42lv6wk4K03z4ZWlR_pP5rqdyXEfrGWbg62vLSZ6u43PDWSZ2pOCNlS8kFIfsn9whYWY4F5QW2EaElJp4nAvWoTfhAGvELwdipU/w652-h489/IMG_2329.JPG" width="652" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> Dinah is forced to pose for a picture when she would much rather be running.</div><p></p>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-79976668034005643422020-12-05T18:46:00.003-08:002020-12-05T18:46:45.383-08:00Getting Our Maryland House Painted Inside<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEHIJ4j9jSD8rrXBhBn7AQDZCdpN6RZRR3pgVHRwsXT7kHiGkMtlS6FbXhy5VqrqAfwCNoo9jT6HkIm8mB5yBLCy4dqiSVrqLHYruAcUxQOxncq0bbijdveMxTTWfLbTcRNaSxWfq2o18/s640/IMG_33111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="448" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEHIJ4j9jSD8rrXBhBn7AQDZCdpN6RZRR3pgVHRwsXT7kHiGkMtlS6FbXhy5VqrqAfwCNoo9jT6HkIm8mB5yBLCy4dqiSVrqLHYruAcUxQOxncq0bbijdveMxTTWfLbTcRNaSxWfq2o18/w597-h448/IMG_33111.jpg" width="597" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We hired a company to paint the entire interior of our house while we are still up in Maine, so we won't be around to see how they make the sausage. The station manager took our photo and posted it on the station's Instagram page to promote Giving Tuesday to solicit donations for the station. It is a 3 hour show where we play an eclectic mix of music... mostly folky stuff and some Broadway. You can stream it live starting at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays. On yesterday's show we highlighted some of the Grammy nominations announced last week. You can still hear the show in the archive at the link <a href="https://weru.org/show/on-the-wing-tuesday/" style="background-color: transparent; text-align: left; white-space: nowrap;">here</a><span style="background-color: transparent; color: #c9c8cd; text-align: left; white-space: nowrap;">.</span>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-21090529552007039342020-11-29T07:31:00.001-08:002020-11-29T07:54:11.075-08:00What We Have Been Watching On the Tube<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2xBcR1e3ggXRW6zWxaeiUX5IjWDzn8UX80aQp2f7Na6K8rACAPTpUTbL7MWcWpgC1zWRhOd7sFao5e5JHu9bS5DJifTrpSq54Sq9i3ilW_PCTy4fPo9otRzYvPuLhH-Kjvvxu72n6ARw/s2000/shrill.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1500" data-original-width="2000" height="477" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2xBcR1e3ggXRW6zWxaeiUX5IjWDzn8UX80aQp2f7Na6K8rACAPTpUTbL7MWcWpgC1zWRhOd7sFao5e5JHu9bS5DJifTrpSq54Sq9i3ilW_PCTy4fPo9otRzYvPuLhH-Kjvvxu72n6ARw/w636-h477/shrill.jpg" width="636" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Most evenings, Shane and I watch television for several hours. We usually watch the evening news, which I DVR everyday, and then we play along with an episode of Jeopardy, which we also DVR. There are very few network TV shows currently on that we watch... occasionally 60 Minutes. When we watch live TV, it most likely the MSNBC news channel. We do watch a few other other shows on cable, but not many. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Lately, we've been watching the second season of Shrill, starring Aidy Bryant (above). It is on the streaming service Hulu, and is a funny, interesting show, and we love Aidy. It is a about her work and romantic life as a young career girl in the Oregon. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIFYt2bb9-nkAyLFNwXkm6VQ3YkJjVu0z99qCssU3K3rcVaguTf2zwcOHpRHcNnoYK80dAfSi09veUHaWR3BzOlFAvECjQ2tiKHfLpdfKHkjBRtmXjugpBJiaOH1zx50rXbh2aZjQrouo/s1600/crown.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="800" data-original-width="1600" height="334" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIFYt2bb9-nkAyLFNwXkm6VQ3YkJjVu0z99qCssU3K3rcVaguTf2zwcOHpRHcNnoYK80dAfSi09veUHaWR3BzOlFAvECjQ2tiKHfLpdfKHkjBRtmXjugpBJiaOH1zx50rXbh2aZjQrouo/w668-h334/crown.jpg" width="668" /></a></div>Last night, we started watching The Crown. I know we are a bit late to this show. We have been meaning to get around to watching it for years and have heard a lot of great things about it, but we've never gotten around to it until now. The first show was pretty good and we will keep with it.<p></p><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWhDlaF3tLvc0lrwoxJjY8ZE0syxCau88KIX3iiFtrtdPgYWFeLtbOy_MnjexxF6X5-bBjpMkrDRlgfLT-zKZcL_2Qn0s-GWAG9fQF8XmiMTgTMYRkOgWcEA-D9k5-l9Ind6e9xEJQpMs/s1280/mindhunter.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="1280" height="374" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWhDlaF3tLvc0lrwoxJjY8ZE0syxCau88KIX3iiFtrtdPgYWFeLtbOy_MnjexxF6X5-bBjpMkrDRlgfLT-zKZcL_2Qn0s-GWAG9fQF8XmiMTgTMYRkOgWcEA-D9k5-l9Ind6e9xEJQpMs/w665-h374/mindhunter.jpg" width="665" /></a></div>Also last night, we started watching a show called Mindhunter, starring Jonathon Groff (above right). He plays an FBI agent who teaches about dealing with hostage situations and serial killers. It also was very interesting, so we will probably keep with it also. There are two seasons of this show and it and the Crown are both on Netflix. </div><div><br /></div><div>Let me know what you are watching that is good.</div>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-38175745305336701522020-11-28T06:03:00.000-08:002020-11-29T08:53:30.940-08:00We Bought a Second Home This Year<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixMviMf9Q9zdI635ObR92Wyo34lv3l23vae-UELVIzO3uaY6hoJPP4gqhdht_Ez7riS5LZ0qaZBaW66hkuW7vhLyM2sKf_Z6h6u7_hNmNtu96w-GQdP9D1sNBUOIn7WYFGqra5edKRPcg/s2048/IMG_5339.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixMviMf9Q9zdI635ObR92Wyo34lv3l23vae-UELVIzO3uaY6hoJPP4gqhdht_Ez7riS5LZ0qaZBaW66hkuW7vhLyM2sKf_Z6h6u7_hNmNtu96w-GQdP9D1sNBUOIn7WYFGqra5edKRPcg/w653-h490/IMG_5339.jpeg" width="653" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">When I started up this blog again recently, I mentioned one of the main things that happened with us this year is that we purchased a second home. It is in the town where I grew up, Rising Sun, Maryland. It is a small town in the northeast corner of Maryland, about halfway between Baltimore and Philadelphia. It is also where much of my family still lives. Also, Rising Sun is just a couple hours from New York City, DC, and several other metropolitan areas where we can access restaurants, piano bars, theater, and other benefits of urban life. We love Maine and it will continue to be our main residence, but we will be spending more time in Maryland to be able to have more time with family and extracurricular activities. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here are some photos of the house, which we bought sight unseen. We did see photos, and my sister and niece did a walk-thru for us and sent us video and pics, but we didn't see the house in person until after we bought it. We love the house, but it needed lots of work that still continues. It had room air conditioners, but we put in an HVAC system. That installation caused us to lose a closet, so we had another closet built in the main bedroom. We had all the light fixtures replaced, bought a new dishwasher, refrigerator, and washer and dryer. We had to buy a bunch of furniture also. Monday, a company is going to start work on repairing the walls and painting the entire interior. Frankly, it is a money pit, but the result will be a pretty awesome place we hope. Will post some after photos when we return after the painting is done. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGc-wWDjRAp2cy3R0GXfbKm5ahQ1Rc7rCRU9f6Jrq04PgDqCoI5uBt5IVarFJQWlOLh9WFe7entABg82E_XURG5YXPi7iohw_VdO_zOPXQH3LnLDHpn8l9gSmFyAfUDUnsFCW0ZTb4zWk/s480/IMG_2311.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="320" data-original-width="480" height="415" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGc-wWDjRAp2cy3R0GXfbKm5ahQ1Rc7rCRU9f6Jrq04PgDqCoI5uBt5IVarFJQWlOLh9WFe7entABg82E_XURG5YXPi7iohw_VdO_zOPXQH3LnLDHpn8l9gSmFyAfUDUnsFCW0ZTb4zWk/w624-h415/IMG_2311.JPG" width="624" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The backyard is small but nice, and over to the right is the detached garage.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsC4P-EtVDVnP_4GoVNW3Q-t89GUjetJr1FJvhnS5bI37MEa2l0TTk1rXDPnaykd3-kWm-D-MHkTcpFJdFOxxOQ1qaz-t9_GUjW0g9cs9kKrojyDfR0gRunqN98nQHym6LJaLbnUV5rO8/s480/IMG_2313.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="320" data-original-width="480" height="373" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsC4P-EtVDVnP_4GoVNW3Q-t89GUjetJr1FJvhnS5bI37MEa2l0TTk1rXDPnaykd3-kWm-D-MHkTcpFJdFOxxOQ1qaz-t9_GUjW0g9cs9kKrojyDfR0gRunqN98nQHym6LJaLbnUV5rO8/w560-h373/IMG_2313.JPG" width="560" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The fireplace is going to have an insert and a cleaning.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzTbX7gFT2T-7EU0aPCJgmmwhLBS3xSwJmkya4U9prgfkYEYJFUybipLRdouMeI9WDrFHEXNef9gEsmPLxOFJV4hrzKw8sm5UMDMYpxvJJ5o8anzhceKhyphenhyphenRaial1aGmy57LUJolI7xrG0/s480/IMG_2314.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="320" data-original-width="480" height="370" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzTbX7gFT2T-7EU0aPCJgmmwhLBS3xSwJmkya4U9prgfkYEYJFUybipLRdouMeI9WDrFHEXNef9gEsmPLxOFJV4hrzKw8sm5UMDMYpxvJJ5o8anzhceKhyphenhyphenRaial1aGmy57LUJolI7xrG0/w556-h370/IMG_2314.JPG" width="556" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The living room from the opposite side. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0JOgxHKWSIWq3BNXp3B7jX40m_VeAQA-1HLAFjD0-2jtgiFfHZZ2EdWa7l7oj_U5NMNY4HpQlLDxTbz5i_5KRYjheX-R_fyG435YzcRE0JvZ9g69vJst0NaW8sqRXUpssAQXsx8bX9QE/s2048/IMG_5347.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="419" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0JOgxHKWSIWq3BNXp3B7jX40m_VeAQA-1HLAFjD0-2jtgiFfHZZ2EdWa7l7oj_U5NMNY4HpQlLDxTbz5i_5KRYjheX-R_fyG435YzcRE0JvZ9g69vJst0NaW8sqRXUpssAQXsx8bX9QE/w559-h419/IMG_5347.jpeg" width="559" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">We bought this table for $45 and the chairs are on loan from my niece, Nicole. We had a nice dinner, which I find are a lot of work and then the meal is over before you know it. The weather today is horrible... cold and rainy all day. I did manage to do a 5K turkey trot on my treadmill this morning. </p><p>We did watch some of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, but was reminded why we don't like it. It is just one ad after another promoting this show or product and then it goes to commercials. There were a few things we did enjoy... the Gay Pride Parade marching band, and a scene from the Broadway show, Jagged Little Pill, which we had tickets to before the Pandemic caused all of Broadway to close till who knows when...</p><p>I took Dinah for a walk in the rain midmorning. Shane was up bright and early making his apple pie. We had turkey breast with a raspberry sauce, mashed potatoes, Mac and Cheese, glazed carrots and yeast rolls. Below are some pics of our day today.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH9g48117hCQZQRDh48EQzJyPp02xdo8wx3SJ79IAQ1b7Ml6oEO05jOYLlOdA-n_GdfW06WH-twG8htpNOXkq3lcWAkbWHQHut20xlvPXwjLN0hIkAQ0EhefcZrqUd3UuNEekv2-8uvqg/s2048/IMG_2296.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Our family gathering today will consist of just Shane and myself. We are staying home and cooking a somewhat traditional Thanksgiving meal. We are having turkey, but we're not cooking a full turkey. I bought turkey breast slices, which I will basically fry, but will make a bit better by adding a raspberry sauce. We'll also have mashed potatoes (microwave), stuffing (Stovetop), glazed carrots, macaroni and cheese, and yeast rolls. It is a very starchy, unhealthy meal, but it's Thanksgiving, so it is fine. <p></p><p>The best part of the meal is dessert. Shane will be making an apple pie from scratch this morning. Apple pie isn't my favorite, but his apple pies are usually very delicious. We have good vanilla ice cream and whipped cream also. </p><p>My favorite item for Thanksgiving is pumpkin pie. Our local grocery store here in Maine offer very good "Old Fashioned Pumpkin Pies" for just $2.99! I know they are good because this isn't the first one I've purchased this season. I have never made a pumpkin pie myself, but know it wouldn't be much better than these $2.99 pies. And these $2.99 pies are a lot less trouble. Anyone who knows me knows I like a bargain, and in my book being able to get such a delicious dessert for under $3 qualifies as a Thanksgiving miracle. </p><p>It's a rainy, dreary day here in Maine today. We'll be watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV and I will try to offset our meal with a run on the treadmill. </p><p>We do have so much to be thankful for this year. We are alive and healthy (but somewhat less healthy after today's meal). It looks like our president's days in office are numbered, next year will be better with the hope of vaccines, and we will soon have a new president that isn't insane. </p><p>Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating! </p><p><br /></p>BlogMarkBloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07055243084906096819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6532543041192147346.post-27965070937625306082020-11-25T03:00:00.001-08:002020-11-29T08:56:38.347-08:00Shane and I Play the CHICKABOOM!<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/14nXaiiFi6Q" width="560"></iframe><div><br /></div><div>I love rockabilly singer Tami Nielsen's new album called CHICKABOOM! One of the best songs on the album is Ten Tonne Truck (above).</div><div><br /></div><div>Shane and I have a radio show on WERU in Maine, which is a local community station. Our show is 3 hours long starting at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesdays. We play an eclectic mix of folk, rock, pop, country, oldies... basically whatever we feel like. We played the above song today. Lately, we've been regularly playing songs from CHICKABOOM! Actually, I just like saying CHICKABOOM!</div><div><br /></div><div>Today's show was just Shane in the studio, though I still helped prepare the show. I stayed home to take care of our dog Dinah, as it has only been a week since she was spayed. Being the princess she is, she would not be happy being left alone for 5 hours. </div><div><br /></div><div>You can listen to a recording of our radio show by clicking on the WERU logo on the right side of our Webpage. The Early Months<p> Wow! I was so surprised that I got three comments on yesterday's post after 7 months of not posting anything. Thanks to everyone who provided comments! To be fair, posting a pic of the new puppy is hard to resist. We love Dinah more than I thought possible. I thought I would post more pictures of her. First up are the early months. These are from Many and June of this year. We think she is beyond adorable. </p><p>Some more info about Dinah: Her father was a Golden Doodle and her mother is our friend's Labradoodle, Elenor, who we have babysat in the past. The seven puppies were born on March 15, the Ides of March. We got Dinah about 8 weeks later in May. Because of the pandemic, we were not able to visit the pups until about a week before we took her home. Dinah was the smallest of the litter and looks the least like a doodle than any of her brothers and sisters. We were hoping she wasn't going to be a shedder, but it looks like she will be. At least we'll save money on grooming. She is the most Golden looking pup of the litter. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB9wSM0Q8l1Lptc5TdHnr5uuPvp08HfBAsaBTQx9jS47T-30MJm2BEJOcOxbLA7keg4OQqKybkcyJD4r1Hdb2ttd2KpN-O1ljSbU7dI2FuU3dHhZ7qnXKJ2uCFVv8tQ6aF6BckQpGLKOY/s2048/IMG_1647.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="688" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB9wSM0Q8l1Lptc5TdHnr5uuPvp08HfBAsaBTQx9jS47T-30MJm2BEJOcOxbLA7keg4OQqKybkcyJD4r1Hdb2ttd2KpN-O1ljSbU7dI2FuU3dHhZ7qnXKJ2uCFVv8tQ6aF6BckQpGLKOY/w516-h688/IMG_1647.JPG" width="516" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Dinah and me the first day we met.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUkgCESYI5NKj1Cv8nj0VYq-fD9o3GiotD1tGZXsvzTv-5Eewr8VRlgP1DhLFwFTUd5fKZCFug0iry2IB2WD0cnsSGnkW2BbQJmhbCTCGEcWlc1SFW62GHnnzXAM7FTqgXC0eOk_G4EPc/s2048/fullsizeoutput_1157.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2025" data-original-width="2048" height="541" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUkgCESYI5NKj1Cv8nj0VYq-fD9o3GiotD1tGZXsvzTv-5Eewr8VRlgP1DhLFwFTUd5fKZCFug0iry2IB2WD0cnsSGnkW2BbQJmhbCTCGEcWlc1SFW62GHnnzXAM7FTqgXC0eOk_G4EPc/w548-h541/fullsizeoutput_1157.jpeg" width="548" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Dinah's first lobster.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjARIRzawQJtKodhIyewmrZF-LTYuBrmESp8bZWUhnW7kztdZcZzN-Gu1CvHjq3Q-8DhK3yuijURhghO8nbpOHTKDxmePTaFx34StvnuzenfOCGk2aB4lqFFGD4ki7ehj7bB1vdVD-0Qkg/s2048/fullsizeoutput_116c.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjARIRzawQJtKodhIyewmrZF-LTYuBrmESp8bZWUhnW7kztdZcZzN-Gu1CvHjq3Q-8DhK3yuijURhghO8nbpOHTKDxmePTaFx34StvnuzenfOCGk2aB4lqFFGD4ki7ehj7bB1vdVD-0Qkg/w533-h400/fullsizeoutput_116c.jpeg" width="533" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Dinah on our stone bench in the front yard.</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh6CkTJzJHE8JoCJc1OFyoPJcut7z6nXHP3vXnAg4n2gA7nsIbNrpaLPYcm5YIG2O1KqjTJWgVi1b8_bL3V3oA4-byOv8dzAJfURNviHQIJVCHjrOu9bk2q_InbSoPTsEIr0JyQ2BSh_4/s2048/IMG_1714.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="642" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjh6CkTJzJHE8JoCJc1OFyoPJcut7z6nXHP3vXnAg4n2gA7nsIbNrpaLPYcm5YIG2O1KqjTJWgVi1b8_bL3V3oA4-byOv8dzAJfURNviHQIJVCHjrOu9bk2q_InbSoPTsEIr0JyQ2BSh_4/w481-h642/IMG_1714.JPG" width="481" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Dinah just being Dinah.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEaIiiFaQIK6p0WOCtrrxaflSXYKubipMMQWUz9UfCyqtOwiqUDNOKytCNK_j3Yj7fBQWD_89w8EEV3zUNa1ylhwp_bhGp3RKB2VxhRj9hWvlNcgTOH4lbdZuApFuXMSxr0gzPePkqd68/s2048/IMG_1882.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="423" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEaIiiFaQIK6p0WOCtrrxaflSXYKubipMMQWUz9UfCyqtOwiqUDNOKytCNK_j3Yj7fBQWD_89w8EEV3zUNa1ylhwp_bhGp3RKB2VxhRj9hWvlNcgTOH4lbdZuApFuXMSxr0gzPePkqd68/w563-h423/IMG_1882.JPG" width="563" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Her ET moment. The first clue is that I haven't posted since forever.</p><p></p><p>Since my last post, we got our puppy, Dinah, and she is awesome. We have continued doing our radio show... a three hour eclectic music show on Tuesdays. We bought a house in my hometown of Rising Sun, MD, which needed lots of work. So we have been busy. </p><p>It would be impossible to do a complete update of everything that has happened in the last 7+ months, so I'll just leave you with those highlight right now. Above is Dinah at 8 months. She just had her operation to remove her lady parts on Tuesday, so she has been recovering from that. Luckily she has been doing extremely well. It had been more than 2 months since I had a haircut and every morning I would wake up to this; hair standing at attention. I like to keep my hair fairly short, so my only real option was to have Shane cut my hair. The result is below. I think he did pretty good. I like it better. He won't let me cut his hair though.<br />

Since it has been about 2 weeks since we went to the grocery store and I had only two eggs that were about to expire (and the rest of the ingredient I needed) I decided to make chocolate chip cookies. I got out the old KitchenAid mixer (it came with the house and is really old) and whipped up some cookie dough. I used the recipe on the bag of chocolate chips.<br />

I have to say they came out pretty good. I make them pretty big so instead of the 5 dozen it was supposed to make, I got 43 cookies total. Today was a very windy, miserable rainy day, and having some of these to munch on made it much better. </div>

We have never drank the water that comes out of our faucet. We have well water and our basement looks like Star Wars with all the equipment we have that makes our water safe to use. Even so, the water still was kind of gross. It isn't supposed to have have any bacteria or radon now and it smelled okay, but we would not drink it because it wasn't clear. We would wash our clothes with it and shower in it, but not use it to drink or cook. We were assured it was fine to drink, but come on... it was yellow.<br />
<br />
Finally, we decided to buy a water filter pitcher to treat the water. After doing some research, we decide on the <a href="https://www.clearlyfiltered.com/products/clean-water-pitcher">Clearly Filtered</a> brand pitcher. They had a demo on their website showing the filter treating water tainted with red food coloring coming out crystal clear. We gave it a try and it works! Now do not have to buy gallon after gallon of bottled water. It is amazing! Our water is clear! You can see the difference! I can't stop using exclamation marks! We highly recommend this company and we are not being paid to endorse them.<br />
<br />
The full price of the pitcher was $75, but it was on sale when we got it and then I found a coupon code by searching Google. I ended up paying around $57. Though it came slightly damaged, they guarantee the pitcher forever and are sending me a replacement part at no charge. Luckily, a piece of tape made the part usable for now.<br />
