Dry January is over! Here's to a wet rest of the year! |
Shane and I decided to not drink alcohol for the entire month of January. Our last drink was before midnight on New Year's Eve and not a drop of wine or beer or any other adult beverage crossed our lips until February. Yesterday (Feb 1), we started with a cocktail (Frozen Cosmos) in the evening during a FaceTime call with our Besties, Deborah and Debbie, and later went to red wine with a steak dinner.
We are known for having our candlelit dinners in the evening. Shane usually cooks (our standard is steak, baked potato and green beans), as he did on this occasion and we listen to a record on the stereo. We started with Nina Simone and continued with some Edith Piaf. The wine with dinner was a Christmas gift from my niece, Megan and her fiancé. It was a Cabernet Sauvignon from Boordy Vineyards in Maryland. Thanks Megan and Drew!
Not drinking for a month was only a concern when we went to someone's house for dinner. We got by with our seltzer or sparkling apple cider while others drank their beverage of choice. However, we did miss the wine at our candlelit dinners. They were much quicker and we had many fewer in January. Those dinners are much more pleasant when you can sit and leisurely drink wine and listen to the vocal stylings of whomever is on the turntable.
In a couple days we are hitting the road to do our cross-country trek. We have lots of packing and preparations to do before then. We've never driven across the country before and the thought of driving for hours day after day is starting to make me wonder if this really is a good idea.
